Why Rory McIlroy’s FedEx Cup win was months in the making

The days after his heartbreak at the Open Championship, the images played back in Rory McIlroy’s mind.

“That night was tough,” he said at his next start in Memphis, reflecting on the major championship he’d nearly won. Another major championship he’d nearly won. “It probably took me three or four days to get back to myself again.”

He was comforted by the fact that he’d played well, navigating the Old Course without a final-round bogey, falling victim to Cameron Smith’s stunning 64. Still, he kept revisiting the putts that had slid by and the up-and-downs he’d wished he’d made — at 9, at 12, at 14 — as the claret jug slipped from his grasp.

He headed from St. Andrews to London with his wife Erica and their daughter Poppy to escape from it all.

“I took two weeks off, didn’t touch a club, didn’t see the inside of a gym, probably didn’t eat a vegetable,” McIlroy said. But neither carbs nor regret filled the void. There was nothing to do but get on with it.

So that’s what McIlroy did.

First, there was the small matter of securing the PGA Tour’s future. He was in regular communication with Tiger Woods, collaborating on how to build on the meeting they’d held with a small group of players at the JP McManus Pro-Am. They needed buy-in from those pros and others, too, so they needed a plan to appease the PGA Tour’s loyalists and sway those on the fence. McIlroy felt some top pros were being turned without seeing the full picture. He reached out to Smith, who he feared was leaving for LIV, to offer congratulations but also to lay out the case for him to stay. He helped organize another meeting for the week of the BMW, players only, where Woods would fly in to demonstrate his commitment.

There was also the matter of McIlroy’s golf. His unofficial appointment to PGA Tour spokesman has carried significant weight, but to be the Tour’s alpha dog, your game has to keep pace. Speaking out had energized him at the Canadian Open, where he’d won in dramatic fashion, and McIlroy is among the most popular athletes in any sport, but his critics seize on his freewheeling nature at the microphone. Speaking out invites continual scrutiny and criticism — even if it’s uninteresting criticism. Less talk, more practice. Meh. Still, McIlroy gave his enemies some fodder when he showed up to the first round of the playoffs without his best stuff. He missed the cut.

The work continued. Erica and Poppy were at their family cabin in upstate New York, but if McIlroy joined them he’d be unable to play, so he and caddie Harry Diamond headed to Delaware, the site of the following week’s BMW Championship. After a few days’ practice, he helped lead the player meeting — dutifully acknowledging that Woods was the “alpha in the room” — and secured buy-in from pros like Cameron Young, Adam Scott, and Rickie Fowler, all of whom had previously expressed interest in LIV. He finished T8. Progress on both fronts.

Freelancing boom and its potential for the Economy

Hiren Pandit:

The digitalisation of many professions around the world has contributed to creating a new, competitive and innovative labour market. Self-employed people who mostly work from home have been sharply rising in numbers in the past years than in the past two decades. It took a pandemic to make some people realize that you don’t need to travel for work to sit in front of a computer connected to the internet. People have realised that the idea of a “safe and secure” job is just a dream that can collapse at any time. There’s no need anymore to work at a specific location in a specific city or town, we all live in the internet’s global village.

Freelancing offers work opportunities that anyone with an internet connection can do, with the option of choosing from a variety of job descriptions on many given platforms. The popularity of freelancing is attributed to many factors, including flexibility, competitive pricing and the wide array of opportunities available. This growing field of work combined with economic underdevelopment compared to more developed economies has contributed to the formation of large freelance communities.

According to a survey conducted by the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), there are 50,000 Facebook-based entrepreneurs in Bangladesh at present. With around 43 million Facebook accounts in Bangladesh (Statista, 2021), the platform gives businesses opportunities to contact clients on a far wider and diverse scale. The government is trying to provide necessary policy support and incentives to stimulate the IT sector. The government has recently started issuing freelancer ID cards, which are providing identity to approximately 650,000 self-employed professionals in Bangladesh. To encourage the freelancing sector in Bangladesh, Bangladesh Bank instructed banks to provide necessary loans and credit cards to the IT freelancers.

With the widespread use of the internet and smartphones, the very nature of work has been transformed over the past decade or so. The employee-employer dynamic that was present in the previous century has started to evolve, paving the way for new forms of work that were unimaginable two decades ago.

Over the past decade, Bangladesh has experienced an online freelancing boom and is the world’s second-largest supplier of online freelancers currently. The proliferation of Bangladesh’s digital infrastructure enabled the platform economy to rapidly expand over the past years, both in terms of the number of platforms and the number of total customers.

Freelancing offers work opportunities that anyone with an internet connection can do, with the option of choosing from a variety of job descriptions on many given platforms. The popularity of freelancing is attributed to many factors, including flexibility, competitive pricing and the excess of opportunities available. This growing field of work, combined with economic underdevelopment compared to more developed economies has contributed to the formation of large freelance communities.

With the advent of rapid digitalisation, many developing countries like Bangladesh are focusing on the digital economy, a global market for digital outsourcing. The digitalisation of a country’s economy not only drives innovation in its service industry but also fuels domestic job opportunities, enabling faster economic growth. In the quest to lower costs and risks, many large corporations in developed nations like the US, UK and Australia are turning to IT outsourcing from countries including Bangladesh, leading to a recent boom in freelancing.

Freelancing jobs include everything from computer programming to web design, tax preparation and search engine optimization. This has generated a wide range of new opportunities for people in emerging markets that did not previously exist. Asia has become the number-one region for providing outsourcing services to the rest of the world.

In the last few years BPO (Businesses process outsourcing) sector has gone through massive expansion and it has achieved 24 per cent year growth year after year and shows signs of more expansion. When the sector was first introduced back in 2008 it only made $4 million in revenues and companies had to take the license from the telecom regulator but they closed their operations very quickly but as days have gone past by the telecom regulations have bought in significant changes to their rules and thus the earnings rose by 17 times since.

India is the largest supplier of online labour, with close to 24 per cent of total global freelance workers, followed by Bangladesh (16 per cent) and the US (12 per cent). Different countries focus on different sectors of freelancing services. For instance, technology and software development are dominated by Indian freelancers, while Bangladesh is the top supplier of sales and marketing support services. The platforms are flourishing, utilizing cheaper employment compensation, as labour laws of countries do not recognize this new type of workers and their contractual framework. As more and more people depend on the platform economy for their employment and livelihoods, there is a moral, economic, legal, and political imperative to ensure that these workers are treated fairly in the platforms they work for.

The 200-million-dollar worth of a market share is currently owned by Bangladesh and if Bangladesh can utilize this great opportunity this sector can become the second biggest earner of foreign currency. Bangladesh has another great plus point which is its population. There are more than 110 million people who are young and they can play a vital role in the rise of this industry. Currently, Bangladesh is the 44th largest market-based economy and it is one of the fastest growing economies in the world. The country is constantly growing and this has grabbed the attention of the developed countries who now plan to outsource their IT and ITES (Information Technology Enabled Services) products. They hire thousands of freelancers through different platforms like Upwork, Freelancers and Balancer. Bangladesh plans to reach more than $ 5 billion outsourcing revenue by 2022.

ICT ministry has started to provide 10 per cent incentive to the agencies who are bringing money through legal channels. But most of the time this money is not coming through legal channels such as banks since PayPal is not used in Bangladesh for which we are not getting the potential remittance! If we can control this flow of money through the channel our rate of earnings would boom at a great volume!

It is a very well-known fact that there is a lack of job opportunities in Bangladesh but due to the BPO sector alone it is now providing jobs to 45,000 people, which at the start had only 900 people working in the whole sector, shows the promise this sector holds. The reason behind the rise of this sector is also because of the government’s rules and regulations. The government is offering some incentives. By 2024 there will be 100 per cent tax exemption, for foreign employees 50 per cent tax reduction for the first three years, for rental and utilities 80 per cent vat exemption, up to 10 per cent cashback on total export revenue and no restriction on foreign equity holding. With such lucrative incentives offered by the government, this is why companies are now more inclined to come here and build up their companies. Bangladeshi freelancers currently have a lot of US and UK clients and it is the second-largest freelancing talent supplier in the world.

Bangladesh is one of the countries that has a huge youth population. Of its 164.7 million people, almost 65 per cent are under the age of 25. This vast, young and strong human resource, however, is still lacking in the knowledge necessary to thrive in the competitive global market. Although freelancing as a career has gained in popularity over the last few years, thousands of Bangladesh’s young people require proper training and government support to help them take advantage of this opportunity.

Some freelance jobs are small and take less than a day. Other contracts can last for years. Freelance IT work includes data entry, website and software design, mobile application development, graphic design, search engine optimization, social media marketing and more. Freelancing is very important across the world where millions of individuals are hired, generally for piecemeal tasks, using smartphone apps developed by technology start-ups. It refers to a free market system where short-term and flexible work is prevalent and businesses frequently recruit independent contractors, project-based workers, and freelancers rather than full-time employees. Many complicated and time-consuming jobs have been eased and accelerated due to rapid technological improvements, making freelancing work easier.

First look: 160m Project Blue launched by Lürssen

The 160-metre new build Project Blue has been launched by German shipbuilder Lürssen, hitting the water earlier today at the yard’s Bremen facility in the north of the country.

Details of the displacement motor yacht have been kept tightly under wraps throughout the construction process, though it is understood it was designed inside and out by Terence Disdale.

So far, the yard has revealed that Project Blue has a beam of 22 metres and an impressive interior volume of 15,320 GT – similar in size to 156 metre Dilbar, which has a volume of 15,917 GT and was delivered by Lürssen back in 2016 with design by Espen Oeino International and Winch Design.

First images have now been revealed of the project following the launch, debuting her clean lines and raked bow.

Images of the superyacht also show that she is equipped with two helicopter landing sites; a large helideck at the bow and a smaller helipad aft.

Each of the four upper decks features a large al fresco entertaining area and there is a swimming platform connected to a beach club, plus forward stateroom balconies on either side.

Natus aspernatur sunt sit provident laboriosam esse ea

AB Yachts, a brand of Viareggio-based NEXT Yacht Group, has announced the sale of the first hull in its new AB 120 Beach series to an American owner.

The 36.5 metre superyacht is scheduled for delivery later in 2022 and is characterised by an innovative multipurpose stern area, which measures 50 square metres and includes a large cockpit and a Jacuzzi for up to five guests.

Although no renderings of the model have yet been released, the yard has also confirmed that the yacht will offer a beach club area complete with folding terraces, a garage for tender and toy storage and a special “moon theatre” for open-air cinema viewings under the stars.

The announcement follows the recent news that AB Yachts has also sold two more units in the AB 100 range to European owners.

Both versions will be customised to the client’s preferences but offer an 'open-roof' configuration for the saloon, an advanced handling and storage system for water toys and versatile outdoor areas for al fresco entertaining. The first of the two AB 100 yachts is due for delivery in June 2022 and the other will follow in March 2023, both offering an impressive top speed of over 50 knots.

Voluptas eum in velit non repudiandae veniam

The design of the Absolute Yachts 60 Fly points the way ahead for the Italian builder. Key to the new look is the chopped stern and “cockpit terrace,” which dispenses with the usual molded transom in favor of an essentially blank-canvas, 160-square-foot aft deck. It has nothing more than a stainless-steel guardrail and glazed balustrade to separate it from the swim platform. Gone is any built-in furniture; instead, owners can choose modular furniture or anything else.

The result is serious, customizable outdoor space. The same is true on the flybridge, which hangs over most of the side decks and virtually the whole aft deck. The flybridge measures around 300 square feet with booth seating, a wet bar, and a helm console with one or two seats. There’s more open space aft for owner preferences. The forward half of the flybridge is protected by the hardtop, and most of the remainder has an electrically retractable sunshade.

The 2021 debut models

Appreciate the subtle differences

Our ambition to never stand still is reflected by the fact that we perfect each and every watch down to the smallest detail – from design to the finissage of the parts. For instance, each movement is assembled twice, whether it is a simple three-hand watch or a timepiece with elaborate complications. It is standard practice at Lange to artisanally finish even the smallest parts or surfaces that are not visible. Often, it is these small but subtle differences that play the decisive role. This ambition also inspired the development of the debut models that we would like to acquaint you with.

703_048_B3_0

CABARET TOURBILLON HANDWERKSKUNST

The CABARET TOURBILLON HANDWERKSKUNST is an extravagant timepiece limited to 30 pieces. It combines superb watchmaking artistry to the outermost angles of its rectangular case with elaborate craftsmanship and finishing techniques. They include semi-transparent enamelling of the white-gold dial and several manual engravings of the dial and the movement, with the lozenge chosen as the signature design element. Measuring 22.3 by 32.6 millimetres, the form movement is composed of 370 parts, of which no fewer than 84 are integrated in the filigreed tourbillon that weighs only a quarter of a gram. The movement owes its historic significance to a tiny component that transformed it into a milestone of precision watchmaking: the first stop-seconds mechanism for the tourbillon which was presented by A. Lange & Söhne in 2008.

703_048_B1

LANGEMATIK PERPETUAL in pink and white gold

The LANGEMATIK PERPETUAL was the first mechanical wristwatch that combined a perpetual calendar with the Lange outsize date. It differs from other calendar timepieces with small but subtle features such as the ZERO-RESET mechanism and a main corrector for simultaneously advancing all calendar displays. On its 20th anniversary, it is now available in white and pink gold with a blue dial, limited to 50 pieces each.

310_028_B1

SAXONIA THIN in pink gold

The latest version of the SAXONIA THIN in pink gold features a dial that is faced with a very thin layer of blue gold flux. Thousands of copper oxide crystals embedded in the material enliven the deep blue by reflecting the incident light and adding copper-coloured glimmer. They cause the dial of the two-hand watch – limited to 50 pieces – to sparkle like a starry sky. A shiny dark blue leather strap with a solid pink-gold prong buckle rounds out the noble appearance of the watch.

LANGE 1 PERPETUAL CALENDAR

The LANGE 1 PERPETUAL CALENDAR is a timepiece for connoisseurs who appreciate the subtle differences. The self-winding watch is fully focused on its eponymous complication: Apart from the typical Lange outsize date, a retrograde day-of-the-week display and a leap-year indication, the watch features a peripheral month ring and a moon-phase display that also shows whether it is day or night. The newly developed model with a case diameter of 41.9 millimetres is available in pink gold with a grey dial made of silver or – in a limited edition of 150 watches – in white gold with a solid pink-gold dial.

LITTLE LANGE 1 MOON PHASE in white gold

THE LITTLE LANGE 1 MOON PHASE is a mechanical, sublimely designed gem within the collection. In comparison with the LANGE 1 MOON PHASE, its diameter is 1.7 millimetres smaller; it is available in two new versions with a dark-blue gold-flux dial on which countless tiny stars appear to be twinkling. In the second version, a bezel set with 56 brilliant-cut diamonds creates a radiant frame for this fascinating dial. A shiny leather strap and a white-gold buckle complement the elegant appearance of the watch.

TRIPLE SPLIT in pink gold

The TRIPLE SPLIT is the only mechanical watch capable of measuring comparative and lap times with durations of up to twelve hours. For example, it can stop any number of lap times to an accuracy of one-sixth of a second in multi-hour events such as marathons, regattas, or vintage car races. The white-gold edition presented in 2018 is now followed by a second version – also in a 100-watch limited edition – in pink gold with a blue dial and rhodié-coloured subsidiary dials.

As the soul of the watch, this movement showcases an “open heart” to reveal its extraordinary design. The 20 Best Electric Supercars

Over the course of the last decade, electric powertrain vehicles have gone from environmentally-focused novelties to increasingly ubiquitous machines being offered across pretty much every automotive and motorsport sector. From family wagons, vans, and sedans, to pickups, commercial big rigs, and sportscars. And it’s this latter category that’s hugely benefitted from the last decade’s rapid advancements in EV powertrain technology, ultimately giving way to a myriad of vehicles that aren’t just impressive by electric supercar standards, but by supercar standards in general.

With dozens of startups and established players tossing their respective hats into the proverbial EV supercar ring and vying for lap time and spec-sheet supremacy, recent years have witnessed a massive influx in electric supercar and hypercar offerings. And with new models popping up on a monthly basis and the number of available options constantly ballooning, we thought we’d take the time out to unpack these pinnacles of proton-powered performance, and round up the 20 best electric supercars.

The Electric Tipping Point

The Final Days Of Internal Combustion Engine Dominance

While it wasn’t uncommon for automotive enthusiasts to discount some of the early electric supercars, often writing them off as gimmicks or novelties, it’s become incredibly difficult to debate the merits of today’s battery-powered cars. The enormous strides made in the segment have unlocked previously unachievable performance and torque figures in the gas-powered realm, and for the first time in history, electric powertrains are outperforming their fossil-fuel-powered counterparts.

A culmination of more than a century of research and development is increasingly being bested by technology that has largely emerged since the turn of the millennium, if not more recently. While battery weight largely remains a kink that needs ironing out, electric supercars boast a number of advantages over vehicles driven by traditional fuel-combusting power plants. The entirety of their torque is on tap instantly, without having to rev the motor up to an ideal RPM, the motors themselves are markedly smaller, more compact, and more mechanically simplistic, they aren’t affected by altitude like internal combustion engines, and they can squeeze out gobs of torque in amounts previously only dreamed of.

There are also secondary benefits to piloting a fully-electric performance car. For starters, there’s the environmental factor and the fact that they’re almost always significantly cheaper to fuel than gas-powered rides, especially when going to the track and using race fuel compared to vehicles of the proton-powered variety. Speaking of race tracks, there are numerous iconic circuits in the US like Laguna Seca that are being threatened by the surrounding community due to the noise levels produced by racing and track-days. Electric supercars are damn-near silent, eliminating this issue entirely. The electronic nature of an electric powertrain also allows for some interesting and unique options such as the different “Mario Kart-style” modes and boosts available in Formula E.

ARIEL P40 HYPERCAR

Though the British firm has carved out an impressive reputation for producing lightweight track-day toys, Ariel buckled down and proved it meant business when it unveiled the P40 over the summer of 2017. The AWD four-wheeled rocket‘s 42kWh battery is married to a quad 295hp motor arrangement that gives the P40 the ability to clock 0-100mph runs in just 3.8-seconds.

New Ghibli Hybrid: the first electrified vehicle in Maserati

New Ghibli Hybrid: the first electrified vehicle in Maserati's history

Modena, 16 July 2020 – The spark of electrification ignites Maserati's future: with the new Ghibli Hybrid, the Trident Brand enters the world of electrification.

The new Ghibli Hybrid represents one of the most ambitious projects for Maserati, which after the announcement of the new engine for the MC20 super sports car now sets the seal on another step forward towards the brand's new Era.

The choice to introduce the hybrid technology on the Ghibli sedan is no coincidence: this model, with over 100,000 units produced since its launch in 2013, perfectly embodies the Modena-based manufacturer’s DNA.

In fact, the challenge facing Maserati was to enter the world of electrification without altering the brand's core philosophy and values. The result? The creation of the best possible hybrid. What's more, Ghibli Hybrid will retain the unmistakable sound that has always distinguished every Maserati.

The arrival of the new Ghibli Hybrid thus expands the Maserati range, which is now even more competitive and responsive to the demands of the market.

Design

Ghibli Hybrid is immediately recognisable, thanks in part to the new design of both exterior and interior. The common denominator of the restyling, developed by the Centro Stile Maserati, is the blue colour, chosen to identify all cars with hybrid technology and the new world they represent.

On the exterior, the blue colour characterises the three iconic side air ducts, the brake calipers and the thunderbolt in the oval that encloses the Trident on the rear pillar. The same blue colour reappears inside the car, in particular on the embroidered seams of the seats. The new Ghibli Hybrid also introduces new stylistic contents, starting from the new front grille, with bars redesigned to represent a tuning fork, a musical device that emits a sound of extreme purity, and which also evokes the Trident symbol itself. There are significant changes at the rear of the car, where the light clusters have been completely restyled, with a boomerang-like profile inspired by the 3200 GT and the Alfieri concept car.

Mild Hybrid

In perfect harmony with its DNA, Maserati has chosen a hybrid solution focused primarily on improving performance, while also reducing fuel consumption and cutting emissions.

The hybrid technology exploits kinetic energy the car accumulates when in motion, recovering it and transforming it into electricity during deceleration and braking, and storing it in a battery.

The innovative powertrain, the outcome of in-depth engineering development work by the technicians and engineers of the Maserati Innovation Lab in Modena, combines an internal combustion engine (4 cylinders, turbo, displacement of 2.0 l) with a 48 volt alternator and an additional electric supercharger (e-Booster), supported by a battery. This solution is unique in its segment, and is the first in a new generation of powertrains, with the perfect trade-off between performance, efficiency and driving pleasure.

The battery is mounted in the rear of the car, with benefits in terms of improved weight distribution.

This version weighs about 80 kg less than the Diesel.

Thanks to maximum power output of 330 hp and torque of 450 Nm delivered from just 1,500 rpm, the new Ghibli Hybrid's performance data are very impressive: top speed of 255 km/h and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds.

Ghibli Hybrid occupants will still revel in the unmistakable sound that characterises all Maserati models, thanks to the optimised exhaust, which includes specially designed resonators.

Connectivity

Ghibli Hybrid also marks the debut of the new Maserati Connect program, which enables a constant connection with the car: the information exchange continues when on the move, to improve the services offered to the driver. As well as updating the software packages, the system performs checks on the car and monitors the Safety Security services in emergencies.

The Maserati Intelligent Assistant multimedia system is latest-generation, based on digital inputs from Android Automotive, software that delivers an innovative User Experience fully customisable to the driver's personal preferences. The multimedia system's HD screen, with new graphics, more user-friendly and without surrounds, is increased in size from 8”4 to 10”1. A new instrument panel with digital devices and new graphics is also introduced.

Electrification the Maserati way

The new Ghibli Hybrid represents the first step in a plan that will lead to the electrification of  all new Maserati models. The Brand's first all-electric cars will be the new GranTurismo and GranCabrio, scheduled for 2021.

MILLE MIGLIA BAMFORD EDITION

A BESPOKE DESIGN

Thanks to the collaboration between Chopard Co-President Karl-Friedrich Scheufele and Bamford Watch Department founder George Bamford, the 33 numbered Mille Miglia Bamford Edition are characterised by attention to every detail and offer vivid proof of a commitment to craftsmanship and quality expressed through an elegant sports watch.

Resulting from a dialogue between these two gentlemen, the Mille Miglia Bamford Edition features an elegant combination of black, dark grey and flame orange. The 42 millimetre-diameter case is made of bead-blasted DLC stainless steel. In addition to its dark grey colour often found on vintage cars, this contemporary and innovative material has the advantage of being scratchproof: a key asset for a sports watch subjected to the trials of racing. On its side, a crown engraved with a steering wheel and two piston-shaped pushers also recall the collection's inspiration. Short lugs ensure a perfect fit on the wrist, as does the cordura-effect black rubber strap punctuated by orange stitching and lined with orange calf leather.

On the dial, the contrast between the matt dark grey surface and the orange touches accenting the seconds hand and chronograph counters enhance legibility. Similarly, the tachymeter scale is offset by an orange gradation on the black inner bezel ring, while the date window between 4 and 5 o’clock is clearly visible.

ACCURATE MEASUREMENTS

The Mille Miglia Bamford Edition chronograph is equipped with a high-precision watchmaking ‘engine’, chronometer-certified by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC). Beating at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and visible through a sapphire case-back engraved with the iconic 1000 Miglia arrow, this mechanical chronograph movement with automatic winding and an approximately 42-hour power reserve drives displays of the hours, minutes, seconds, chronograph, date and stop-seconds functions. These features make the Mille Miglia timepieces the ideal instrument for the speed and distance calculations required during car rallies.

Highlights include a Magician Box made in the 1815, consigned by a distinguished collector, one of five known examples and the last to remain in private hands; two Patek Philippe 5970 and a Rolex GMT-Master from the collection of Hiroshi Fujiwara – the Japanese designer who pioneered Asia’s street culture – all retailed by Tiffany & Co.; and three Contemporary Classic Patek Philippe with special dials, property formerly in the collection of Eric Clapton, CBE. Sotheby’s is also thrilled to announce it will offer cryptocurrency as payment option – first among major watch auctions – for a lot featuring the 50-carat Baguette-Cut Diamond Patek Philippe Nautilus Reference 5990.

Two Ultra-rare Automata from the Early 19th Century

The sale is distinguished further by two extraordinary unique pieces made for the Chinese market, from an important private collection, and each embodying auspicious symbols of royalty, strength and good fortune.

The Magician’s box is one of five known examples and the last to remain in private hands, sitting at the pinnacle of all five in terms of the execution, decoration, complex mechanism and overall condition. Last offered for sale by Sotheby’s in 1964, it has remained in a private collection ever since. The necessaire formerly in the collection of John Asprey, is one of only two examples known of this size and is fresh to the market. The other known example is kept in the Hans Wilsdorf Collection at Rolex.

PATEK PHILIPPE REFERENCE 5970

A WHITE GOLD PERPETUAL CALENDAR CHRONOGRAPH WRISTWATCH WITH MOON PHASES, 24 HOURS AND LEAP YEAR INDICATION, RETAILED BY TIFFANY & CO., FROM THE COLLECTION OF HIROSHI FUJIWARA

ESTIMATE: HK$1,600,000 - 2,800,000 / US$200,000 - 360,000

PATEK PHILIPPE REFERENCE 5970

A PINK GOLD PERPETUAL CALENDAR CHRONOGRAPH WRISTWATCH WITH MOON PHASES, 24 HOURS AND LEAP YEAR INDICATION, RETAILED BY TIFFANY & CO., FROM THE COLLECTION OF HIROSHI FUJIWARA

ESTIMATE: HK$1,600,000 - 2,800,000 / US$200,000 - 360,000

Produced in a single series between the years 2004 and 2011, only 2,800 pieces of reference 5970 were ever made across all metals. These numbers are already low for any watch, especially for one of the most desirable Patek Philippe models in modern times, but the present watches have one small detail which elevates them into the stratosphere of rarity and collectability. Located beneath the moon phase is the “Tiffany & Co.” retailer signature. This indicates that the watch was retailed at Tiffany’s New York headquarters, where every double-signed Patek Philippe is individually stamped.

ROLEX GMT-MASTER, REFERENCE 6542

A STAINLESS STEEL DUAL TIME ZONE WRISTWATCH WITH DATE, BAKELITE BEZEL AND BRACELET, RETAILED BY TIFFANY & CO., CIRCA 1958, FROM THE COLLECTION OF HIROSHI FUJIWARA

ESTIMATE: HK$800,000 - 1,600,000 / US$103,000 - 205,000

Stamped on the gilt dial of this Rolex is the Tiffany & Co. signature – the first Tiffany & Co. 6542 to appear at auction. Though neither companies have provided any explicit dates, it is commonly accepted that Tiffany & Co. stamped Rolex dials between the late 50s to early 90s. The Rolex 6542 was produced between 1955 to 1959, providing only a tiny window for them to be Tiffany-stamped, hence their rarity on the market. Manufactured circa 1958, the watch was one of the earliest known Rolex wristwatches to be double stamped by Tiffany & Co., making it one of the most historically significant piece to be ever offered at auction.

Property Formerly in the Collection of Eric Clapton, CBE

Formerly in the collection of Eric Clapton, and now coming to the market from a highly important and world renowned collector, the following Patek Philippe references of 3970, 5004 and 5940 are each fitted with a different coloured dial that perfectly matches its case metal. The reference 3970 and 5004 have tachymetre scales and a Breguet numeral at 12 o’clock. These unusual variations are not only confirmed on the Certificate of Origin, but also illustrated beautifully on the coloured portfolio photographs. The reference 5970 is the only known example in white gold to be fitted with Breguet numerals and bracelet, which is also confirmed on its Certificate.

Also once the personal property of the legendary guitarist are 12 Rolex contemporary classics, in a variety of GMT, DateJust and Datyona, complete with guarantee card confirming their provenance. Each watch in its own right is highly desirable due to its rarity and hard to find either at retail or at auction. Below are three examples from this boutique collection, representing Rolex’s brushed, smooth and floating models.

First Watch in Major Auction to Accept Cryptocurrency

PATEK PHILIPPE NAUTILUS, REFERENCE 5990

A WHITE GOLD AND BAGUETTE-CUT DIAMOND-SET DUAL TIME ZONE FLYBACK CHRONOGRAPH BRACELET WATCH WITH DATE,

CIRCA 2020

ESTIMATE: HK$8,000,000 - 16,000,000 / US$1,000,000 – 2,000,000

Not only is the present reference 5990 the first example embellished entirely in baguette-cut diamonds to be offered to the market, but also the first watch in major auction accepting cryptocurrency as a payment method. Launched initially in 2014, the 5990 is the most complicated Nautilus ever made by Patek Philippe, incorporating the caliber 28 520 C FUS for the travel time, chronograph and date. From the bezel to the band, the present example is decorated with approximately 50 carats of diamonds and shines brilliantly on the wrist. It embodies the phrase “diamond hands”, used by the community to describe adamant cryptocurrency traders holding on to their high volatility assets. Cryptocurrency and the blockchain technology have inspired countless innovations in the fields of logistics, data managements, privacy, security and of course, NFTs, to name a few. Sotheby’s is proud to accept this currency of the future to be a payment method for this exemplifying and futuristic wristwatch.

A pendant brooch in quartz, onyx and diamonds by Bvlgari worn by Silvana Mangano as she moves through the rooms in a palazzo in Rome in the film by Luchino Visconti, Conversation Piece. From the terrace of the apartment belonging to the professor played by Burt Lancaster, you can see cupolas and bell towers.

Architectural elements and out-of-scale sculpted busts top the balustrade around the parapet. The beauty of Rome and its treasures. In 2019, Bvlgari presents its new High Jewellery collection inspired by the world of films: Cinemagia.

“This is a land of dreams and imagination, the celebration of the link between this Roman High Jewellery and the seventh art. The magic lies in Bvlgari’s ability to dialogue with all artistic disciplines when it produces its jewels. Italian knowhow results in a piece of sculpted metal jewellery set with gems, in a symphony of colour; the transposition of a dream into a feat of architecture and reality,” explains Carolyne Coquet, High Jewellery & Haute Horlogerie Managing Director for the brand. You immediately imagine the days when Hollywood walked along the banks of the Tiber. The golden times of “La Dolce Vita, a rarefied world, all about glamour, folly, extravagance, self-celebration, and savoir vivre when Bvlgari became what it still is today, the jeweller to the stars. That was when the spirit of ‘Larger than Life’ was born.” Bvlgari dreams in colours and brings them to life in this collection with its strong hues, on statement necklaces that are a declaration of power and splendour.

If films are ‘life with the dull bits cut out’, as the quote from Hitchcock suggests, Bvlgari jewels are the elixir of joy bringing the magic of the silver screen to daily life. They glitter on red carpets around the world and remain forever imprinted in the minds of those who lay eyes on them. “Elizabeth Taylor, Anna Magnani, Sophia Loren—the stars from that period understood the significance of jewels. They flocked to the boutique in Via dei Condotti, purchasing them for themselves and wore them on set and to parade before the photographers. They understood that jewels are, like eyes, a window onto the soul, a declaration of personal identity. Followers of this philosophy are our clients today.

The art world has an enormous role to play in changing peopl

On 15 October Christie’s will auction Cecily Brown’s painting There’ll be bluebirds. It’s the first of a series of works donated by artists and galleries to help fund a joint initiative — Artists for ClientEarth — to fight climate change, as discussed in the video above by ClientEarth CEO James Thornton and Frieze co-founder Matthew Slotover

When the art dealer Thomas Dane realised the size of the carbon footprint of his galleries in London and Naples, he was shocked. Between 2018 and 2019, his business was responsible for more than 200 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions — 87.9 per cent of which had come from flying artworks and staff around the world.

Acknowledging the urgent need for change, Dane — along with representatives from Kate MacGarry, Lisson Gallery, Sadie Coles HQ, The Art Newspaper  and Frieze Art Fair — founded Gallery Climate Coalition (GCC), a charity that develops strategies to make positive environmental changes in the commercial art world.

The initiative launched in October 2020, and among its tools is a free carbon calculator, developed with the help of environmental advisors, which gauges the CO2 produced by travel, shipping, energy, packaging and printing.

‘Civilisation is moving in the right direction, but it’s not doing it fast enough’ — ClientEarth CEO James Thornton

By making these figures public, businesses and organisations can be held accountable for improving their eco-credentials. As a result, GCC members have already committed to cutting their carbon footprint by at least 50 per cent by 2030, in line with the Paris Climate Accord.

The organisation offers practical advice on how the industry can improve, whether by switching from air to sea freight, participating in more local fairs, or using environmentally-friendly IT companies — helping the art market, as Dane puts it, to go green ‘from its roots up’.

Christie’s avoids shipping artworks by air wherever possible, and uses reusable and recyclable crates. It has pledged to be carbon neutral by 2030

In the space of a year, GCC has grown from 14 members to an international network of more than 550 galleries, artists, non-profit organisations, institutions and business leaders.

Earlier this year, Christie’s became a patron of GCC and pledged to be carbon net zero by 2030.

The auction house already avoids air freight where possible and has predominantly switched to digital catalogues and recyclable or reusable crates for transporting artworks. The London office has been powered by renewable energy since 2019 and aims to reduce its landfill waste by 90 per cent over the next decade.

In July, Christie’s and GCC announced a new partnership with ClientEarth, a groundbreaking charity set up to fight climate change, protecting people and the planet. Its work focuses on changing the system to make our world a better, fairer place, using the most effective tool in the arsenal for change: the law.

In the short film above, ClientEarth CEO James Thornton and Matthew Slotover, co-founder of Frieze, discuss the importance of the new venture.

‘The whole art world seems to be in agreement about the fact that we need to change our ways’ — Cecily Brown

‘Civilisation is moving in the right direction, but it’s not doing it fast enough, and this really powerful leverage that the law gives us allows us to speed it up,’ says Thornton. ‘For example, we can make governments move faster, and we can stop the building of coal-fired power stations.’

Artists for ClientEarth will oversee seven sales of works donated by artists and their galleries across the next 12 months, including major pieces by Antony GormleyRashid JohnsonBeatriz Milhazes and Xie Nanxing. The aim is to raise funds, awareness and support for ClientEarth’s essential work.

Each artwork will be sold locally in one of Christie’s salerooms across the globe in order to reduce shipping.

The series of auctions begins in London during Frieze week with Cecily Brown’s There’ll be bluebirds, offered as part of Christie’s 20th/21st Century evening sale on 15 October.

The work, donated by Brown and Thomas Dane Gallery, carries an estimate of £500,000-£700,000.

The whirlwind composition of a falling bird — a flurry of brushstrokes in flesh tones, blue and green that seems to subvert the pastoral idyll — debuted in Brown’s acclaimed solo show at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire in September 2020.

According to Brown, there is no lack of will to improve things. ‘The whole art world seems to be in agreement about the fact that we need to change our ways,’ she says.

‘Artists can make a small difference in a few ways I can think of. One is to ship work to shows instead of flying it. Unfortunately, that means no more working till the last possible minute.’

View Kilmurry House, a Picture-Perfect Country Manor in Irel

Dating back to 1670, Kilmurry House, County Kilkenny, is one of the finest country manors in Ireland. But beyond the handsome Palladian-style façade, its considerable charm is enhanced by its rich history. Celebrated Irish artist Mildred Anne Butler was born in the Grade I listed Georgian property, and lived there for the whole of her long and purposeful life.

A member of the Royal Academy from 1893, Butler was an acclaimed painter for more than 30 years. Kilmurry, with its exquisite walled garden, tranquil trout lake, and verdant woodland, was the inspiration for many of her finest en plein air paintings that depict the abundant wildlife and flora surrounding this magnificent home.

An aerial view of Kilmurry House, a country manor in Ireland

Nestled on 100 acres (40 ha) of lush grounds, the estate is a haven for wildlife and a magnificent country retreat for residents, with leisure spaces such as a large outdoor courtyard overlooked by mature greenery.

Originally purchased in the late 1800s by her father, Captain Henry Butler, grandson of the 11th Viscount Mountgarret, the house remained in the family until 1981. A restoration has extended the building to 17,861 square feet (1,659 sq m) and the expansive property now boasts 11 bedrooms and seven full baths, as well as a newly added indoor swimming pool.

You can see from an artist’s point of view that this was an unbelievable space to work from—Roseanne de Vere Hunt

“When the current owners took charge about 11 years ago it was on 20 acres (8 ha), but they have since bought back its gated lodge plus land to make it up to the original 100-acre (40 ha) estate,” says Roseanne de Vere Hunt, head of country homes, farms, and estates at Sherry FitzGerald. “It’s a true country house surrounded by mature woodland giving total privacy, once you drive through the gates, there is simply peace and quiet, which is exactly what people are looking to Ireland for—low-density living and a calm, relaxed lifestyle.”

A formal dining room with large round modern light fixtures

The formal dining room, which leads off the home’s light-filled entrance hall, offers the perfect combination of 18th-century grandeur and modern design flourishes.

Beyond the gated entry, a tree-lined drive leads through the grounds, ending at a smart forecourt. Step inside the majestic limestone building, and Butler’s legacy soon becomes clear. Generously proportioned ground-level rooms take in a bright entrance hall, an elegant drawing room with views over the lake, a comfortable sitting room and library, and a formal dining room, as well as a unique gallery space and a light-filled orangery that once served as the artist’s studio.

“All of the reception rooms feature original carved fireplaces and moldings, and are perfect for entertaining,” says de Vere Hunt. “The upgraded orangery replaces a previous structure that was in poor condition, and the space—a favorite of the current owners—is now bright, airy, and quite wonderful. It really does invite you to just sit and relax.”

Also on the first floor is a fully equipped chef’s kitchen with marble surfaces and professional-grade appliances, a games room—once a grand ballroom—with access to the ample terrace, and the contemporary indoor pool. Additionally, there is a self-contained courtyard cottage. “This has its own kitchen and sitting room, and could be used for guests or as staff quarters,” says de Vere Hunt. “The same goes for the two-bedroom gated lodge, which has a modern kitchen and bath.”

An indoor swimming pool with large doors leading to a terrace

A contemporary addition to the home, the indoor pool is surrounded by walls of glass that open to a sun terrace in summer and provide insulation in the winter.

Move upstairs via the sunlit, open staircase, and the second and third floors are home to a relaxing entertainment room as well as the bedrooms, with the impressive owners’ suite located at the very top of the house. With an original fireplace, a dressing room, and a chic bath, the suite also benefits from views over the two-acre (0.8 ha) walled garden that inspired much of Butler’s work, most notably her best-known painting, The Lilac Phlox, which is a plant that still flourishes there to this day.

The space is bright, airy, and quite wonderful… it invites you to relax—Roseanne de Vere Hunt

Perhaps the building’s greatest attribute is the amount of light that floods every space, thanks to the vast glass doors and double-height windows that feature throughout. “It’s such a rarity in a period property like this,” notes de Vere Hunt. “You can see from an artist’s point of view that it was an unbelievable space to work from.”

Related: Uncover the Designer Secrets Behind a Modern Irish Castle

Green and white furniture with many large plants in the orangery

Kilmurry’s orangery once functioned as Butler’s art studio. Today, the renovated space’s glass doors and double-height windows leave it feeling bright and airy—something often rare in historic homes.

The grounds are a nature lover’s sanctuary, offering mature woodlands—a haven for wildlife, including eagles, otters, and red squirrels—as well as pastures for horses and livestock, paddocks, a children’s adventure trail with a zip line through the woods, lush, lawned gardens, and space for a helipad.

“In my opinion, there is nothing on the market now as good as Kilmurry. The current owners have expertly refurbished the house for the 21st century, while retaining the integrity of the original build,” says de Vere Hunt. “It’s in walk-in condition, and what’s more, it won’t need attention for many years to come. This standard and finish in a country house are rare, which makes it an unmissable opportunity for buyers looking for history, privacy, and security in a pocket of rural Ireland.”

What to Expect During a Luxury Yacht Auction

The luxury yacht brokerage market can be an arduous process for sellers to navigate, and it’s not unheard of for beautiful, high-end vessels, even those of the “superyacht” class to sit on the market for months (or even longer). And while waiting for the right buyer to come along, carrying costs like dockage, crew, insurance, maintenance and fuel add up quickly, and are significant.

Elite Auctions is here to change the paradigm when it comes to listing or buying luxury yachts. A live, no-reserve luxury yacht auction provides sellers a cost- and time-saving alternative to the conventional list-it-and-wait approach. An auction guarantees a fast sale (often in under 45 days) with effective marketing and expert support provided along the way. For buyers, a no-reserve auction offers the tantalizing prospect of a great deal – and the thrill of competing with other ultra-high-net-worth individuals for the win on auction day.

If you’ve come to the point where you’re ready to offer your vessel for sale, or perhaps it’s already been on the market for some time, and are considering a luxury yacht auction, we’ve broken down the process for you, from the pre-listing stage to the final settlement. So, ready to sell? Let’s take a look!

1. Careful Yacht Selection

For every vessel we place for auction, we’ve already taken steps to ensure that it is in nothing short of “Bristol” condition, deserving of its luxury status, and positioned to impress the right buyer. During the initial consultation, we’ll discuss the seller’s goals, concerns, and priorities regarding the auction. This helps us to create an ideal timeline for the auction, one that meets the seller’s needs, and to begin crafting a strategic marketing plan that advertises the extraordinary opportunity to the right prospects.

2. Marketing Magic

Every successful yacht auction is the product of a marketing team that combines all of their skills, previous successes, and expertise together to get the vessel placed in front of

well-qualified, highly-motivated buyers. We work with the yacht broker to learn more about the unique characteristics of the yacht and speak with the owner to determine what they would like to achieve financially when the hammer drops and the auctioneer screams “SOLD!” at the conclusion of the auction. Then, we set our people to work. Videographers, photographers, media buyers, website designers, SEO specialists and many more, all working together to achieve the same successful outcome for the seller. Our market directors and project managers organize and schedule previews and private demo cruises, while in-house marketers ensure the incredible buying opportunity that a no-reserve auction represents is publicized as effectively as possible.

3. Building Competition

In the days leading up to the auction, prospective bidders iron out their financial arrangements for an all-cash purchase that closes quickly, perform any final inspections of the vessel, sign or return their terms & conditions, and prepare to make a deposit (usually in the form of a cashier’s check). Elite Auctions completely and thoroughly vets all bidders prior to the auction to ensure they are prepared for, and fully aware of, the legally-binding financial obligations they’ll be responsible for, which makes for smooth sailing on auction day.

The auction itself, run by professional and fully-licensed auctioneers with decades of experience, increases competition among buyers by essentially creating a “multiple offer” scenario, common in real estate, for example, and the result? A highly charged atmosphere of back-and-forth bidding with the auctioneer calling out the bids (and always asking for more) until the last call is given and the gavel drops.

4. The Final Sale

After that, the winning bidder provides the predetermined deposit up-front, and a final settlement date is set (usually within 45 days of the auction itself). This entire process is managed by the experts at Elite Auctions every step of the way. Our team has made it their life’s business to facilitate a simple and successful transition between sellers and buyers, and we’ll do everything we can to ensure both parties are satisfied.

Interested in learning more about selling with Elite Auctions? We’re here to answer your questions and to help you find a buyer for your luxury yacht at true market value, on a date of your choosing, in the shortest amount of time. Don’t hesitate to contact us today if you’re ready to sell. A member of our team will respond as soon as possible.

Candela C-7 speedboat

The C-7 is capable of a top speed of 30 knots thanks to its hydrofoiling technology

History of the C-7

Candela was founded in 2014 by now-CEO Gustav Hasselskog after a holiday in the Stockholm Archipelago. While various factors motivated him to spearhead the development of a clean and energy-efficient speedboat, initially it was the high fuel costs incurred by repeated trips to and from the mainland during the holiday.

“Many people in northern Europe live either in island towns, island suburbs or similar, where regular commutes or other short trips are most conveniently made by boat,” explains Candela’s communications manager Mikael Mahlberg. “Gustav had looked into electric boats but found existing hulls consumed too much energy to get decent range at high speeds.

A fully submerged hydrofoil enables the speedboat to ‘fly’ above the waterline. It is made from a carbon composite that can be twisted for performing banked turns

“For reference, a conventional 25 ft speedboat consumes about 15 times the energy per kilometre of a standard family car. And lithium-ion batteries contain just one fifteenth of the energy of gasoline.”

Anyone hoping to make an electric boat with a conventional hull hits something of an engineering wall. If they want high speeds, they get very short ranges, even with the highest-quality lithium-ion batteries currently available.

The optimum with present technology is around 120 kWh of energy for roughly 20-25 nautical miles of range, since integrating any additional battery packs will increase the vessel’s weight and drag to offset any potential gains in range, until eventually the boat simply sinks.

Faced with this hurdle, Hasselskog opted to create an electric hydrofoiling system that would lift a boat’s hull above the water and remove the problem of hydro drag altogether. He therefore began gathering a development team in 2014 that soon became Candela Speed Boat. Building the first prototype began in 2016, the final prototype followed in 2018, and serial production started in 2019.

With the boat and its unique technology now highly optimised and matured, Candela has now started manufacturing and selling the C-7, making it the first electric hydrofoiling vessel to enter serial production, with about 30 boats produced and sold each year. That is currently the maximum capacity of the 50-person company’s production capacity, but the company plans to scale up production, its next target being 400 units a year by 2024.

There is one last technology in the C-7 worth noting. Green City Ferries’ latest version of its fast commuter electric ferry design now does without the surface-effect air bubble technology in favour of a hydrofoil-assisted catamaran architecture, making the hydrofoil a de facto blueprint for the future of maritime e-mobility.

Hull materials and hydrodynamics

In the earliest design stages for the C-7’s hull, very little was defined – only that it had to fly, and would therefore need to be as light as possible. The first prototype was built in an aerospace carbon fibre factory, made entirely from the best composite material Candela could find.

Philippot says, “The only downside with a carbon fibre hull is in fact the expense of building it, to make the boat affordable for serial production. Carbon composite is around half the weight of fibreglass composite while being stronger and stiffer. Every gram added would mean we’d need a more powerful, heavy and expensive powertrain, which would risk reducing our range.”

Judicious mechanical and software engineering enables the C-7’s to make banked turns

Although carbon composite is pricier than fibreglass, Candela has striven to use thin carbon parts to reduce the overall bill of materials in the structure. Philippot points out that the labour cost of carbon fibre is a bigger concern than the material cost.

To optimise the value for money in the factory processes, vacuum infusion is used to embed the resins into the carbon fibres for the larger hull sections. The advantages of this process were also espoused by Green City Ferries: by enclosing the fibre and resin within airtight soft plastic bagging, and forcing the latter through the former at -1 bar, it ensures a uniform spread and density of resin.

This is used for the large hull and deck sections, while the struts and rudders (each being around 2 cm thick) were made using a different carbon composite and an undisclosed manufacturing process to ensure they could handle the loads and stresses coming from the waves, from turning, and from carrying the 1.3 t boat, as was the foil to ensure it could twist and deform as needed for turning the boat.

“We searched for a long time for suppliers who could produce the parts with the strengths we needed at a reasonable price, and we did a lot of testing to make sure those thin, lightweight parts could safely handle and transmit huge loads while maintaining the stability of the boat, to be certain we were choosing the right manufacturers,” Philippot notes.

The deck is also topped with teak for aesthetic reasons, and is manufactured with hatches for maintenance workers to access the battery pack, flight controller, and other parts. Beneath the deck is a network of aerospace-style ribs and spars, to maximise the structural strength of the boat while minimising weight.

“If you look inside an Airbus or Boeing aircraft structure, you have a rib, spar or string every 10 cm or so, and the outer skin is just 2 mm thick,” Philippot explains. “Their engineers know from impact tests that this arrangement works, and we know that having a similar system in our boat is key for minimising weight while maintaining safety.

“Most speedboats opt for a sandwich-type outer skin instead, but not only is that too heavy for the C-7, it also isn’t strong enough to help with distributing the loads that concentrate around the three ‘legs’ of the boat.”

To simulate the load distributions, CAD and FEA were used extensively to closely predict the behaviour of the carbon composite, although as mentioned, a lot of real-world tests were needed to get the foil to twist without breaking or being too pliable.

Future plans

The C-7 is now the best-selling premium electric boat in Europe, thanks in no small part to its foiling-based powertrain that offers its owners 95-97% lower operating costs compared with a traditional diesel- or gasoline-powered speedboat.

The P-30 is the largest of Candela’s planned vessels; its design will be scalable for carrying up to 300 passengers at a top speed of 30 knots while foiling

From a commercial perspective, such low operating costs and the greater profitability they could bring, naturally appeal to maritime fleet operators. To that end, in addition to expanding its productive output of C-7s, Candela is growing its portfolio to develop and produce larger boats for use as water taxis and commuter ferries  – an immense market across not only northern Europe, but also the Gulf States, East Asia and realistically any coastal city with large waterways.

At the time of writing, the Candela P-12 water taxi had been officially launched, and will be delivered to its first customers soon. This 8.5 m-long vessel carries up to 12 passengers (hence its name) and consumes 1 kWh/nautical mile, which the company estimates as a twelfth of the energy consumption of standard IC-engined water taxis.

The Candela P-30 is still in development. Its dimensions are less clear – a 30-passenger initial version is the target – but the concept is scalable up to 300 passengers. In addition to a top speed of 30 knots and a cruise of 20-plus knots, with minimal wake disturbances for other ships and 95% less g-force disturbance for customers, Candela sees this boat being a game-changer for waterborne commuting and urban transport in general.

“Waterways these days are mostly seen as obstacles that have to be overcome: you build a bridge over them, or a tunnel under them,” Mahlberg says. “What if we could use them for low-cost, high-speed electric transport instead? In many cities, waterways offer excellent cross-traffic connections but are mostly unused.”

Data gathered on these new vessels and the new electric components they use can be expected to inform the engineering on future versions of the C-7 and other vessels that Candela is likely to build.

Amico Opens Waterfront Marina in Heart of Riviera

Amico & Co. is known to most within the yachting industry as a major player in the refit sector. Now, the established yard is nearing completion on its own Waterfront Marina, whose gates are officially open for guests to dock and discover the delights of the Italian Riviera.

Located in the heart of the Italian Riviera in Genoa, Amico & Co. has benefited from its convenient location and wealth of expertise to become a leading figure in the superyacht refit and repair industry. Counting amongst its impressive portfolio of refit projects the 99m Feadship superyacht Madame Gu and 76m Amels superyacht Boadicea, it is fair to say Amico & Co. cherishes an in-depth understanding of Owner requirements when it comes to big yachts. Now, the Italian refit yard is looking to put that extensive experience and resource to use in its own Waterfront Marina; a full-service superyacht marina specifically catered for the larger yacht market.

Accommodating megayachts up to 110m in length, Waterfront Marina has a choice of 26 superyacht berths measuring 24m and over. Guests can benefit from a full range of services, including 1000 Ampere of shore power at every berth, fresh water, pump-out and Wi-Fi throughout the marina. But the real advantage of berthing here is its unique location. Relatively secluded considering its in-demand location, Waterfront Marina offers the perfect mooring spot for a Riviera cruise while enjoying total privacy and security. Better yet, the fully-fledged refit yard of Amico & Co. is just a stone’s throw away for maintenance works of all scopes and sizes.

Marina berthing and services at Waterfront Marina were completed in October 2020, and the marina is now fully operational and ready to welcome superyachts. Ongoing development includes the exclusive crew service areas and gym, which are due to be completed by the end of March 2021.

This New 18-Foot All-Electric Day Boat Offers Speedy

Magonis Wave e-550

Magonis says it was born out of a passion for cruising and a commitment to sustainability. It makes sense, then, that the fledgling shipyard’s first model is an electric dayboat designed for zippy joyrides sans noise and emissions.

Meet the Wave e-550, a stylish new 18-footer crafted by one of the marine world’s newest names. Magonis, which was established in 2017, has its headquarters in Barcelona, Spain, and production facilities in Sabaudia, Italy. As such, this inaugural design aims to blend Catalan creativity and exuberance with Italian taste and savoir-faire.

With a beam of 6.5 feet, the Wave e-550 is small but not certainly not short on luxury. The interior layout is based on the bowrider style, which means the versatile bow area can seamlessly switch from a cozy dinette to a comfy sunbed when desired. The cockpit, meanwhile, offers plush seating for six, along with a protective windscreen to shield guests from the elements.

Magonis Wave e-550

The Wave e-550 can reach 22 knots at full tilt.

In addition, seafarers can add a ton of optional extras, including a telescopic table, full teak deck, refrigerator, shower and/or an anti-theft system. You can also choose to equip an extra-large awning spanning 86 square feet, which is supported by carbon uprights.

The Wave e-550 is also replete with next-gen tech not typically found on a boat of this size. That includes a 13-inch waterproof iPad that replaces the regular instrumentation, along with a dedicated slot for charging smartphones and a high-end stereo by Fusion.

Despite all this, the Wave e-550 tips the scales at just shy of 740 pounds and is the lightest boat in class, according to Magonis. It also has a draft of just 12 inches and can venture right up to the shore in almost complete silence.

The pocket rocket can run, too. It is available with four different types of electric outboard motors that each promises clean and efficient cruising. The 18 kW Mag Power delivers a top speed of 16 knots while the 30 kW Mag Power reaches an impressive 22 knots. There’s also a 4 kW Torqueedo Cruise that churns out a more modest 4 knots and a 10 kW Torqueedo Cruise that can hit 11 knots.

As for range, the vessel can run for 12 hours at a cruising speed of 3 knots or cover roughly 30 nautical miles on a single charge. You can also fast-charge at any dock from zero to 100 percent in less than 2 hours.

Interested? The Wave e-550 will be on display at the Salon Nautico in Barcelona from October 12 to 17, if you wish to see it in the flesh. The base model with the least amount of power starts from $40,000 while the range-topper with the gutsy motor will set you back upwards of $83,000.
